New and Re-Certifying 4-H Shooting Sports Leaders
Prepare to enhance your skills and earn certification in various shooting sports disciplines! The Colorado 4-H Shooting Sports Leader Training will be offered in March 2025 across four counties:
- March 7-9: Morgan County – Rifle, Pistol, Shotgun, and Archery
- March 14-16: Weld County – Rifle, Pistol, Shotgun, and Archery
- March 21-23: Pueblo County – Rifle, Pistol, Shotgun, Archery, Muzzleloading, Western Heritage, Hunting and Outdoor Skills
- March 28-30: Garfield County – Rifle, Pistol, Shotgun, Archery, Muzzleloading, Western Heritage, Hunting and Outdoor Skills

What is a Shootoffs/Shoots
A shooting sports shoot-off typically refers to a competitive event where participants from a 4-H shooting sports program showcase their marksmanship skills.
The shoot-off can involve various rounds of shooting, possibly with different challenges or targets, and the participants may be scored based on accuracy, precision, and sometimes speed.
The goal of a shoot-off is not only to recognize the skills of the participants but also to provide a competitive and educational experience, encouraging sportsmanship, discipline, and improvement in shooting abilities. It’s a way for 4-H members to showcase what they’ve learned and accomplished in the realm of shooting sports.
Requirements to participate at County/State Shootoffs:
Safety Class Requirements for 4-H Shooting Disciplines
Before you can shoot ANY discipline, you must attend a safety class given by a 4-H certified instructor per discipline. A 2024 4-H shooting card will then be provided with the instructor’s signature and date. Then to complete the card you will need at least 5 safe shooting practices with signatures/dates from a certified 4-H shooting instructor per discipline before the BCF shoot to compete.
To qualify for a state shoot you must participate in a county shoot. Both county and state shoots must be in the same disciplines.

HUNTER SAFETY REQUIREMENT
Hunter Safety Requirement
In order to compete at county or State shoots you will also need to have proof that you completed the CO Hunter Safety Course (copy of Hunters Safety Card needs to be on file). You may practice without completing the CO Hunter Safety Course, but you must have completed the CO Hunter Safety Course to compete in shooting competitions. This portion is NOT provided by 4-H.
All Boulder County 4-H Shooting Sports members must have a Colorado Hunter Safety Education Card and bring the card to the county shoot-off. This rule is stated in the Boulder County Shooting Sports Addenda to Colorado 4-H Shooting Sports State Rule Book 2020-2021 item #7. The current Boulder County Shooting Sports Addendum can be found on the Shooting Sports page of the Boulder County 4-H website.
